Learn it the way we do it

Hands-on training in mapping, GIS and geotechnics

Practical, field-oriented programs for students, early-career professionals and working engineers — built on the same tools and methods we use on live projects.

Taught on real project data

Exercises use datasets from actual surveys, not textbook samples — so what you learn transfers straight to work.

Small groups, supervised

Field exercises and software labs are run with direct supervision, so mistakes get corrected while you are still at the instrument.

Flexible formats

Short workshop or extended program, on campus or at our office — scaled to group size and prior experience.

The programs

Three courses, each built around a working skill

Course 01

Geological Mapping

For geology and earth-science students, junior geologists and field surveyors.

What you’ll learn

  • Fundamentals of field geology and rock / soil identification
  • Preparation and interpretation of geological maps and cross-sections
  • Structural mapping techniques — strike, dip, folds and faults
  • Use of the Brunton compass, GPS and field notebooks for data recording
  • Integration of field data into digital mapping formats
  • Classroom
  • Supervised field mapping

Course 02

GIS & Remote Sensing

For students and professionals in geography, planning, civil engineering and environmental science.

What you’ll learn

  • GIS fundamentals — spatial data types, coordinate systems and georeferencing
  • Hands-on training in ArcGIS and QGIS for mapping and spatial analysis
  • Satellite and drone imagery interpretation using ENVI / ERDAS IMAGINE
  • Land use / land cover classification and change detection
  • Building and presenting map-based outputs for planning and reporting
  • Lab-based
  • Real project datasets

Course 03

Geotechnical Analysis

For civil engineering students and professionals working on foundation design, slope stability or subsurface investigation.

What you’ll learn

  • Basics of soil and rock mechanics for engineering applications
  • Interpreting subsurface investigation and geophysical survey data, including GPR
  • Slope stability and geotechnical modelling using Rocscience software
  • Site characterisation workflows for construction and infrastructure projects
  • Reading and preparing geotechnical investigation reports
  • Classroom
  • Software workshops

How it runs

Shaped around your group, not a fixed syllabus

Each course can be delivered as a short workshop or an extended program, depending on group size and prior experience.

  • College & university batches — on-campus sessions built around your semester and lab facilities.
  • Corporate & team training — upskilling for engineering, planning and survey teams on tools they already own.
  • Individual professionals — join an upcoming batch to add a working skill without leaving your job.
  • Custom scopes — tell us the gap and we’ll build the module around it.

Enrolment

How to enrol

When is the next batch?

Batches are scheduled according to demand and group size. Get in touch with the course you’re interested in and your availability, and we’ll tell you the next window — or open a batch if there’s enough interest.

Do I need prior experience?

No. Each course starts from fundamentals and scales up. Tell us your background when you enquire and we’ll pitch the material at the right level for the group.

Do you run sessions on our campus?

Yes — on-campus delivery is one of the standard formats, and it works well when your department already has GIS lab facilities we can use.

Is there a certificate?

Participants who complete a program receive a certificate from Geo Terrane Consultants recording the course and its contact hours.
